Medicare Watch 2027

Medicare continues to evolve, and we’re keeping a close eye on changes that may affect your healthcare coverage.

Medicare Advantage Oversight is Increasing

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continues strengthening oversight of Medicare Advantage plans with increased focus on:

  • Prior authorization practices

  • Marketing compliance

  • Provider directory accuracy

  • Beneficiary protections

  • Access to medically necessary care

The goal is to improve transparency and strengthen consumer protections.

Prescription Drug Updates

Medicare continues implementing prescription drug price negotiation and other Inflation Reduction Act provisions for certain high-cost medications. These changes are designed to reduce costs over time, although the impact varies depending on the medications a beneficiary takes.

Medicare Part D Premiums Could Increase in 2027

CMS announced it will end the temporary Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration after 2026. The program had provided billions of dollars to insurers to help keep standalone Part D prescription drug premiums lower while the redesigned Part D benefit was being implemented.

What this means

  • Many people with standalone Part D plans could see higher premiums in 2027.

  • About 25% of enrollees may see premiums stay the same or decrease.

  • About 30% may see increases of less than $10 per month.

  • Others could see increases of $11-$20 or more, depending on their plan and region.

Tip: Don’t automatically renew your drug plan. Comparing plans during AEP will be more important than ever.

2027 Plan Information Coming Soon

CMS is expected to release final Medicare Advantage and Part D plan information for 2027 this fall, including:

  • Premiums

  • Copays

  • Drug formularies

  • Pharmacy networks

  • Provider networks

  • Supplemental benefits

These updates will help determine which plans may be the best fit for 2027.
