What to Do When You Get Your New Medicare Insurance
Whether you are new to Medicare or changing plans, getting new insurance can feel overwhelming. Here’s a quick checklist to help you get started and make the most of your benefits:
Review Your Coverage: Understand what’s included in your plan – Part A, Part B, Part D, or Medicare Advantage (Part C) – and ensure you’re clear on your benefits.
Get Your Medicare Card: Keep your Medicare card in a safe place. Any additional insurance cards (e.g., Advantage, Medigap, PDP) can go in your wallet to present at the doctor’s office, hospital, pharmacy, etc.
Set Up Your Online Accounts: Visit Medicare.gov and create an online account if you have not already. This will allow you to track claims, view your benefits, and manage your plan details easily.
The same goes for your Advantage plan, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan and/or Prescription Drug Plan (PDP). Create an account online with your provider to request a new insurance card, track claims, EOBs, order medications and OTC items, and more.Review Your Coverage Needs: Assess if you need additional coverage like dental, vision, hospital indemnity insurance, cancer insurance, and short-term care insurance. Contact me if you need assistance.
Find Providers: Use doctors and facilities that accept Medicare. If you have Medicare Advantage, check your plan’s network.
Schedule a Review: Unsure about your coverage? Schedule an appointment with me to go over your options.
Know Enrollment Periods: Keep track of the Medicare Open Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) and any special enrollment opportunities.
Monitor Your Bills: Regularly review Medicare Summary Notices and medical bills to ensure accuracy.
Take Advantage of Preventive Services: Medicare offers free preventive services like screenings and vaccines – use them!
Protect Your Medicare Card: Your Medicare number is sensitive personal information. Keep your card safe, and be cautious about who you share your number with to avoid fraud.
By following these steps, you’ll be on your way to making the most of your Medicare benefits and staying on top of your health needs.
